Health Plus Hosts Immigration Rights and Services Day

New York, New York - September 28, 2009 — Yesterday, at Roosevelt Park on Grand Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown, hundreds of Chinese natives came out for Immigration Rights and Services Day, hosted by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and managed care organization Health Plus.

At the invitation of Health Plus, the City University of New York supplied lawyers and legal students to dispense free legal advice regarding immigration and naturalization processes and regulations.  Volunteers from Asian Americans for Equality and the Chinese Planning Council were also there to assist with applications and to answer any other questions about acclimating to life in the United States.

Never missing an opportunity for a celebration, Health Plus made the day festive with raffles, healthy snacks and give-a-ways, as well as live musical performances.

“Events like this are not just important to the Chinese community but to our society as a whole,” said Tom Early, Executive Director of Health Plus. “Becoming a citizen of the United States can be an arduous procedure.  There are a lot of steps to figure out, and it doesn’t stop at their swearing- in.  Down the road, we can help them navigate through the healthcare system, but for now this is the best way that we can help these new neighbors of ours.”

Health Plus Marketing Representatives from the Asian Markets Team pass distribute information on free or affordable healthcare, as well as immigration services, during a festival for Immigration Rights and Services Day.
