New York, NY - December 5, 2006 — Monday, December 4, marked the start of the 18th annual New York Cares Coat Drive – now a cherished holiday tradition. Once again, as it has for the past three years, managed care organization Health Plus was there at the Bowery Mission in lower Manhattan to kick-off the event.  Joining Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, Chief Marketing Officer for Health Plus, Ada Rodriguez, and Ariel Zwang, Executive Director of New York Cares, on this cold, bright morning, were nearly 100 homeless New Yorkers, each one receiving a free coat at this first of many distribution events.

Each winter, for nearly twenty years, the New York Cares Coat Drive has meant safety from the cold for thousands of New Yorkers.  Health Plus, working with the NYPD, MTA, and several other charitable organizations will collect coats – estimated to be as many as 70,000 -- at hundreds of locations in the five boroughs. The coats will eventually be distributed to New Yorkers in need.

Later that night, Health Plus and its Executive Director Tom Early were honored at the New York Cares Annual Winter Benefit, where he was presented with an award by Ariel Zwang, Executive Director of New York Cares.

“It’s an honor and a delight to again be Presenting Sponsor of this coat drive,” said Mr. Early.  “We know that tens of thousands of New Yorkers depend on this event for their winter coat, and we want to do the best we can to ensure that no one is left out in the cold.”
