Health Plus, the managed care organization, is sponsoring the Copa las Americas soccer tournament, in which regional adult amateur players represent their nations of origin, while competing for the title cup and cash prizes.
Four-hundred players from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, make up the 20 different teams, which represent Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States. Health Plus is providing the uniforms, designed to resemble those of the corresponding national teams, to create a feeling of pride for players and spectators alike.
During this year's tournament, which runs from May 8th to June 19th, we will see if any team can take the cup from last year's champions Columbian Buenaventura, who were victorious after defeating Mexico Jalisco in the 2003 cup final.
At Natives, a soccer restaurant and bar in Jackson Heights, prior to opening game, the teams were presented their uniforms. Also at that venue, the trophies were displayed, including the "Copa las Americas," which the winning team will receive.
The matches began on May 8th at the Metropolitan Oval in Queens. Patricio Cahue, Special Events Manager for Health Plus, ceremoniously kicked out the first ball.
"Health Plus is pleased to support this competition, as sports plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy body," said Patricio Cahue, Special Events Manager for Health Plus. "In addition, the Copa las Americas tournament fosters values such as team work, pride, and camaraderie among members of the communities that Health Plus serves. "
In addition to the winning team receiving the prestigious "Copa las Americas" cup, they will also receive a $5,000 cash prize; the second place team, a $3,000 cash prize; while the third prize winner will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize. Additionally, a $500 cash prize goes to the player who scores the most goals in the tournament; $500 to the best goal keeper; and $500 to the MVP.
