Brooklyn, New York - March 3, 2009 —  Last Week at I.S. 88 in Park Slope, Brooklyn, managed care organization Health Plus and longtime partner Lutheran Medical Center teamed up, once again, with the NJ Nets – soon to be Brooklyn Nets – to continue their campaign to fight childhood obesity.

The fun filled event featured Nets player Bobby Simmons, the Nets Dancers, the Nets mascot "Sly," and more than 100 students (kindergarten through eighth grade), representing six middle and elementary schools in Brooklyn.

Students in attendance began the day with stretches and warm up drills, led by players from the Nets.  They focused on cardio basics, including wind-sprints and jumping jacks, before introducing the kids to some basketball fundamentals.  After a lesson on proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle, students were broken up into teams and given the chance to play a few scrimmage games.

As a major contributor to the program's success, the future Brooklyn Nets will also host an awards night in March where participating students will be publicly honored during a live NBA game.

"The Nets are very pleased to be partners with Lutheran and to provide an incentive for these children to excel in such a crucial area of their lives," said Brett Yormark, president and CEO, Nets Sports and Entertainment. "We appreciate being part of this important goal to improve fitness and dietary habits of local school kids and we look forward to hosting the children at a game in March."

“Whoever thought that learning about health could be so much fun?” said Tom Early, Executive Director of Health Plus.  “When you take a subject like health and nutrition and really put into a context that the kids can grasp, in this case, professional sports, it helps them to see the big picture. And once you can see the outcome of your life choices, making smart decisions becomes easier and easier.  Hopefully this program will have a lasting effect on these kids and will continue to serve them into their adulthood. At Health Plus we are proud to be a part of this event, and are proud of our partnerships with both the Nets and Lutheran Medical Center.”
