Chinese New Year in Brooklyn
Sunset Park Recreation Center Holds Festival with Health Plus

Brooklyn, New York - February 12, 2009 — This past weekend brought sightings of lions to Sunset Park in Brooklyn, when managed care organization Health Plus sponsored a Festival to Celebrate Lunar New Year and welcomed in the “Year of the Ox.”

Families from all over the community waited in line for their chance to see the famous Lion Dance, and hopefully touch one of the “lions” – an act believed to bring good luck and fortune in the year to come.  The spectacles didn’t stop there. There were also demonstrations of traditional dance and music, as well as the ever-popular Martial Arts Exhibition.  Those in attendance were also treated to some customary New Year’s delicacies, not to mention, many goody-filled red envelopes.

“Events like this are always great fun,” said Tom Early, Executive Director of Health Plus.  “We also participate in parades and other festivities for the Lunar New Year, but since the celebration last two full weeks, it affords us several opportunities to rejoice with the community on a more personal level.  Since Sunset Park has always felt like home to us, celebrating the New Year here gives us the personal connection we relish.”


Health Plus Regional Director of Asian Markets Tommy Cen, graciously accepts a cup of Tea as part of demonstration by the Tea Society of America at a Lunar New Year celebration.

Crowds stand in awe, as two giant “lions” dance to the rhythm of traditional Chinese drums, one of the most well-known customs of the Lunar New Year.
