Chuck Says “Early Spring is Near”
Crowds – and Mayor – Flock to Staten Island Zoo for Groundhog Day

Staten Island, New York - February 3, 2009 — Monday morning, before the sun had burned away the nighttime chill, crowds were filing into the Staten Island Zoo to await the annual prediction of the city’s most famous weather forecasting groundhog, Staten Island Chuck.  Once again, managed care organization Health Plus was there as a sponsor of the day’s events.

Chuck may not be as well known as Punxsutawney Phil of Pennsylvania, but many New Yorkers swear by his predictions above all others.  This year, as Chuck predicted an early spring, while Phil didn’t, many more are hoping that Chuck supporters have had the right idea all along.


New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg tries to coax Staten Island Chuck out of his hole, using an ear of corn, in hopes of getting some good news.

Some of Staten Island Chuck’s biggest fans are also his shortest. Local Staten Island children wait for their chance to catch a glimpse of Staten Island Chuck.
