Staten Island, NY - July 20, 2006 — Last night, the Staten Island Yankees faced off against the Williamsport Crosscutters -- the Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates – the team for which baseball legend, Roberto Clemente played from the mid-1950s until his death in 1972.  The evening was proclaimed “Roberto Clemente Night” and, in honor of the renowned right-fielder, fans rushed to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George in Staten Island hoping to be one of the first 2,500 to receive a free poster of Roberto Clemente – courtesy of managed care organization Health Plus which sponsored the event.

Clemente was not only an extraordinary baseball player – named the National League MVP in 1966 and the World Series MVP in 1971 – but is also remembered for his spirit of philanthropy.  A hero in his homeland of Puerto Rico, Clemente would often deliver food and baseball supplies to his homeland and surrounding Latin nations.  After his tragic death in a plane crash, his dream of establishing a healthy environment in which young children could learn and practice sports was made a reality by the Puerto Rican government, which  donated 304 acres of land to the development of a sport complex  named the Ciudad Deportiva Roberto Clemente (or the Roberto Clemente Sports City) in his honor.

In the spirit of Clemente, Health Plus rewarded a young baseball fan, Richard Matos, with the opportunity to experience the thrill of running through the bases of the ballpark, which overlooks the Verrazano Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.  Police Officer Paul Velez, from the 122nd Precinct of Staten Island, was given the opportunity to throw the opening pitch of the night.

Erica Roman, Ada Rodriguez, Angel Rivera, Josephine Marino, Sonia Antequera, and Jacqueline Mortensen – enjoyed a night of baseball in honor of Roberto Clemente at the Staten Island Yankee game, sponsored by the managed care organization.

Staten Island Marketing Supervisor for Health Plus, Josephine Marino, accompanies a lucky young fan, Richard Matos, on to the field as he prepares to make his “home run” trot around the bases at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
