New York, NY - February 27, 2004 — Medicaid managed care organization Health Plus celebrated the grand opening of its new Manhattan office with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by community leaders, including Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields and Assemblymember Ruben Diaz.

"I am excited about this location because it will bring much needed services and resources to an area where a large population is underserved," says Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields. "This will make a difference."

The new office will further support Health Plus in its efforts to provide free or affordable quality healthcare to all of the city's children and adults who qualify. It is located at 4211 Broadway, on the lower concourse of the Port Authority’s George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Washington Heights. The 3,700 square feet space had been vacant for over 10 years.

"Health Plus plays a critical role in New York's communities by providing affordable, quality healthcare to thousands of children and adults," says Port Authority Vice-Chairman Charles A. Gargano. "We are pleased to see the organization expanding its role to serve the Washington Heights community and making its new home at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. We welcome Health Plus to the neighborhood and look forward to a prosperous relationship."

With a Multi-lingual staff – and open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday – this community-based office will make it easier for residents of Manhattan to enroll in Health Plus. The office joins Health Plus’s roster of locations throughout the five boroughs, including its 210 Sherman Avenue office, also in Washington Heights.

"We are happy to open this office right in the middle of the Washington Heights community because we know this will aid us in our efforts to provide free and affordable healthcare to those in need," says Tom Early, Executive Director for Health Plus. "By expanding our efforts to service this community, we hope to further address health-care disparities in communities of color."

A not-for-profit organization, Health Plus offers three quality comprehensive plans: Child Health Plus, a New York State Department of Health program that offers parents free or affordable insurance for their children and teenagers under the age of 19; Family Health Plus, a state-funded program, offering free health insurance to qualified adults, ages 19-64; and Health Care Plus, Medicaid managed care.

"There are many companies in the industry who take advantage of our communities, but Health Plus is not one of those," says Assemblymember Ruben Diaz. "Health Plus realizes it is all about the community. They primarily provide healthcare, but they do much more."
