Project A+
This event is held in July for Health Plus members who have done well in school. Children from age six to eleven, who earned an overall grade of B+ or higher in all of their academic classes receive a special gift from Health Plus.
This event is held year round. At Project Kid Care, Health Plus teaches families child safety tips, and gives them a free Polaroid photo ID along with an emergency information booklet.
Celebrations
Health Plus has many celebrations throughout the year. All ethnic and cultural activities are celebrated, such as Halloween, Christmas, Ramadan, Kwanza, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, and Chinese New Year. Children from the community are invited.
Health Plus's Book Drive
Health Plus donates brand new books for readers of all ages to schools libraries. Using the New York City Public School System library's book list, a principal can select student-appropriate books and magazines for their schools.
A Book of My Own Program
Health Plus has teamed up with Learning Leaders and Scholastic, Inc., to encourage students to become better readers. Each child who submits a letter or book summary receives an age-appropriate book for his/her personal library. The Book of My Own Program is part of a Health Plus initiative to promote recreational reading at home.
Sponsorship
Our sponsorship comes in many different forms. Health Plus has sponsored schools initiatives for head lice awareness, immigration forums, health fairs, musical concerts and dance performances. In addition, we support programs such as the Brooklyn Public Library Summer Reading Program; free visits to the Brooklyn Children's Museum and Staten Island Children's Museum; and Family Trips to the Brooklyn Cyclones Baseball Club.
Immunization Drive
Health Plus recognizes the importance of immunizations and has a particular interest in assuring that children are up to date with their immunizations. In collaboration with the Department of Health, Health Plus has designated clinics where children can receive free or affordable immunizations.
Health Plus, in conjunction with the New York City Parks and Recreation Department, offers a FREE "English as a Second Language" class to any interested adult at the Sunset Park Recreation Center and the Metropolitan Pool.
Health Plus Players and Meltdown
Health Plus sponsors a citywide initiative of teen actors performing at various school sites to raise awareness about health and social issues. The Health Plus Players bring to life play scripts developed by Meltdown, a group of social workers with expertise in creative art therapies and social service arts. Under the supervision of Meltdown, the teen actors address an array of topics, such as parent/child relationships, drug prevention, and peer pressure.
Workshops and Presentations
Health Plus offers workshops and presentations on how parents can obtain free or affordable medical insurance for children up to the age of nineteen.
Health Plus is committed to improving students' learning skills by rewarding those students with a thirst for knowledge. We sponsor educational competitions that enhance and encourage literacy, such as essay contests and spelling-bee contests, among others.
Health Plus sponsors scholarships in academic achievement or improvement for students that have been referred by corporations or community programs.
